“Envy is the tax of success” Luis Miguel Messianu, Founder/Chairman at alma, and McDonald’s Global Chief Creative Officer at DDB

Nominated by Sam Júdez.

What do you admire and what do you not tolerate in a person?
I admire integrity and consistency with their principles. I do not tolerate hypocrisy and envy, although I am convinced that envy is the tax of success.

What websites, magazines, and social media do you use or follow regularly?
I generally read the New York Times and the Miami Herald. From our industry, Ad Age, Adweek, Adlatina, Produ, Latin Spots, and Campaign. I am very active on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. I like to keep up with what people I care about and admire think and have to say.

What is the best advice someone has given you?
God gave us two ears and one mouth. Use them in that proportion! (very wise advice from my father).

What advice would you give us?
The same! And, above all, always think something positive before opening your mouth.

What is the bravest decision you have made in your life?
“Getting divorced” from people who instead of pushing me forward and helping me to keep “flying”, turned into anchors over time.

What is the first moment you remember in your life?
I will never forget the first time I saw the sea!

A key book:
“Don Quixote,” without a doubt, the book that has marked me the most. No mill has been powerful enough to bring me down.

What do you value most in a company?
Transparency, integrity, sense of purpose, and above all, the strength of its internal culture.

An essential quality for leading…
Humility.

What would you put on your epitaph?
He fought to the end.

In your opinion, what do you think will be the next revolution?
I know everyone talks about technological revolutions, but I think the most important one will be trying to do good to others. Otherwise, we will self-destruct.

What is the last song you listened to or remember?
“Imagine” by The Beatles, written by John Lennon; I listen to it frequently as motivation.

What would you prefer to forget at home: your mobile phone or your wallet?
The wallet, without a doubt. It mainly holds very replaceable things.

Who would you go to have a drink with?
With Don Quixote to teach me to be even more faithful to my ideals; with Steve Jobs, to transmit his perfectionism and love for technology, design, and simplicity; and with Walt Disney, who would surely be an injection of imagination.

What is the strangest app you have on your phone?
Pinso, which gives you hundreds of images, fonts, templates, and tools for a writer like me who dreams of being an Art Director and fails in the attempt :).

Tell us about a time when you messed up at work…
Only once in my entire career did I move for money. It was the worst decision of my life. I learned that money is not everything and that it is important to be true to oneself and one’s principles.

Which 3 executives would you like to nominate?
Juan Carlos Ortiz, President of DDB Latina.

Alvar Suñol, Co-President and CCO of alma.

Isaac Mizrahi, CEO and President of alma.
