“Stop doing what doesn’t bring you joy, a sense of fulfillment, or align with your personal purpose” Agustín Melero, Director – Offshore Wind Project Execution at Avangrid Renewables
Nominated by Imanol San Martín.
What is the best advice someone has ever given you?
I’ve been extremely fortunate to be surrounded by incredible mentors at various stages of my life. One piece of advice I received early in my career has resonated with me time and again: ‘Nothing is agreed until everything is agreed.’ This concept has served as a constant reminder of the importance of staying focused and persistent, no matter how challenging the circumstances. It has guided me through many issues and negotiations, reinforcing the need to remain committed and never give up.
What advice would you give us?
Stop doing what doesn’t bring you joy, a sense of fulfillment, or align with your personal purpose. As wine lovers like me often say: life is too short to drink bad wine.
An essential quality to lead…
Empathy. Short and sweet!
What book, podcast, YouTube channel or any other type of content do you recommend us…
I would recommend ‘The Daily’ from the New York Times, my favorite podcast, and ‘Born to Run’ by Christopher McDougall, a book I recently discovered that is shaping my preparation for my first marathon.
What historical figure would you like to have on your team?
I’d choose Rafael Nadal, who has made history in tennis and sports as a whole. He embodies resilience, humility, respect, integrity, mental strength, and, above all, passion. Who wouldn’t want those qualities on their team?
Have you always been clear about your professional objective?
Yes, it was during my fourth year of college that I realized my professional objective: to make a meaningful contribution to solving the world’s energy and climate challenges, and I have pursued this purpose ever since. It does sound cliché, but it’s a true story.
What is the bravest decision you have made in our life?
The bravest decision I’ve made in my life was to form a family with my wife and have two kids. This choice required embracing the unknown and taking on lifelong responsibilities, but it has brought us tremendous joy and fulfillment along the way!
What is the most curious app you have on your mobile?
Soundbrenner. I use its metronome while running to help raise my cadence to 180 steps per minute. While the app itself isn’t unusual, I believe my use of it might come across as a bit bizarre, given the looks I get from people walking on the bike path.
What do people assume about you, and that isn’t true?
It doesn’t take long for people to realize that I’m originally from Spain. Once they pick up on that, they often assume I’m a big soccer fan, even though I barely care about the sport.
What do you think will be the next revolution in your sector/industry?
With the undeniable evidence of climate change and the ever-growing demand for energy, I believe we’re approaching a pivotal moment. Soon, there will be a global consensus that we have no choice but to take action, reduce consumption, and shift toward efficient and sustainable energy ecosystems. Although this breakthrough will come later than many of us would have liked, and with irreversible consequences already in place, this massive collective alignment will transform the energy sector, finally making it sustainable, balanced, diverse, and optimized.
What do you admire and do not tolerate in a person?
I admire people who maintain a sense of humor, even in the most challenging situations. On the other hand, I can’t tolerate when someone purposely tells me what they think I want to hear.
Which three top managers would you like to nominate?
Christina Becker-Birck, Vice President at The Cadmus Group.
Allie Wahrenberger, Vice President – Engineering at Grid United.
Linette Casey, Senior Account Manager – Renewables at Siemens Energy.
