“The rejection of virtual life will be the next revolution”, Angela Rodriguez, Senior Vice President, Head of Strategy of Alma
Nominated by Isaac Mizrahi.
What do you admire and what do you not tolerate in a person?
I admire curiosity and honesty. I do not tolerate the opposite.
What websites, magazines, and social media do you use or follow regularly?
The NYT, The Atlantic, The Economist, and Twitter, among many others.
What is the best advice someone has given you?
Two. I should be a serious young woman because in primary school a teacher advised me: “Take everything in life with a pinch of humor.” I carry that reminder printed. And the second, when I first ascended to a leadership position, a mentor urged me with “assume your place.” Many women suffer from Impostor Syndrome. It is important to help each other assume the place we have earned.
What advice would you give us?
You should read every day. Curiosity is worth more than current knowledge.
What is the bravest decision you have made in your life?
When I decided that I was going to be a mother and an advertiser. It’s no accident that the 3% conference exists (an international initiative born in San Francisco that fights to end this imbalance: Only 3% of the world’s creative directors are women). This industry demands a lot, but I realized I couldn’t live without it.
What is the first moment you remember in your life?
I would have been four years old and I was taken to my first concert. It was by Menudo (Puerto Rican musical band) Music was my first love; maybe René had something to do with it too… (René Farrait was a member of Menudo).
A key book:
Ready Player One. It takes place in the future, but there is much we can understand about humanity in the current moment we live in.
What do you value most in a company?
Courage and transparency in good and bad times.
An essential quality to lead…
Optimism. If we don’t believe in the possibility of our challenges, there is no possibility of motivating others.
What would you put on your epitaph?
Never gave up.
In your opinion, what do you think will be the next revolution?
The rejection of virtual life. We already see it with young people who reject constant technological connection and the rising trend of real experiences.
What is the last song you heard or remember?
Yesterday I watched almost all the performances of the VMAs on YouTube. So, I guess all the best and worst of the pop world.
Who would you go have a drink with?
I would have soup with my mother’s mother who I never met. And then coffee with the geniuses of Steve Jobs and Bill Bernbach.
What is the weirdest app you have on your phone?
Py. I have a goal to learn another language before I turn another decade.
Tell us about a time you messed up at work?
Every day I think I could have done something better.
Which three executives would you like to nominate?
Andrea Arnau, Chief Marketing Officer at Rokk3r.
Laura Chiavone, Managing Partner, Business Transformation Sparks & Honey.
Juan Luis Isaza, Strategy & Innovation DDB Latina.
